Our future belongs to them

I AM used to observing and monitoring elections each within the nation and Africa.  Nonetheless, being invited to watch the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, during which 1,451,691 younger Nigerians participated for locations within the nation’s tertiary establishments, was a very totally different expertise.

On this case, there have been no contentious points, divisive politics or misinformation. It was infectious seeing faces of younger Nigerians freshly out of highschool or about  leaving  college, sitting earlier than desktops to find out their destiny within the examinations. They have been  younger, harmless and seemingly submissive, but I knew they carried on their younger shoulders the way forward for our nation. In a way, this was our elite group on whose educated shoulders, the burden of rebuilding a Nigeria, destroyed over the many years by generations together with mine. Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, now 83, declared his technology because the “Wasted Era.” I don’t know easy methods to characterise mine besides to explain it because the prodigal technology that frittered away the little positive factors by the Soyinka technology. If Nigeria is to have a preventing likelihood within the subsequent technology, these I witnessed taking the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, examinations, are our greatest fighters.

In a single centre, the candidate seemed like a boy despatched to purchase sweets from a nook store. It turned out that he was 15. In one other occasion, two youngsters couldn’t write the examinations as their fingerprints didn’t match what was captured  within the system. One might solely give them some counsel.

I discovered myself transferring by means of examination centres in Abuja having accepted the invitation of the  JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede to “Monitor the Displays” and “spot-check on any centre(s)” the candidates wrote the examinations which ran for one week in batches of three every day. I used to be a type of JAMB designated “Excessive Energy Opinion Leaders.” JAMB wished impartial and credible Nigerians to watch the examinations to allow them to vouch for its integrity. It additionally wished people who find themselves not encumbered by forms or profession issues  to do on-the-spot evaluation and inform it what ought to be completed within the general curiosity of the nation. I acquired to a centre in Kubwa, having noticed it, I merely despatched a message to the organisation to please cancel the centre and relocate the  estimated 1,000 candidates scheduled to jot down the examinations there.

As I mirrored on this expertise, I felt a tinge of disappointment; irrespective of the candidates’ brilliance, solely 30 per cent of them will probably be admitted as a result of restricted area within the colleges.

The Government Secretary of the Nationwide Universities Fee, NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed stated through the examination  week that of the 7.eight million college admission seekers from 2013 to 2017, just one.9 million gained admission into the prevailing 161 universities. Which means, 5.9 million admission seekers, in a rustic the place a citizen’s future is basically formed by the certificates, couldn’t acquire admission.

Whether or not they acquire admission or not, the actual fact is that the way forward for the nation goes to relaxation on their shoulders; a future already so badly broken  that like mind damage; restore will probably be fairly tough.

Whereas the examinations have been happening, leaders of the Individuals’s Democratic Social gathering, PDP, have been celebrating one in all their very own, the charismatic Chief  James Ibori for his secure return from British jail.  He had agreed to be deported having spent half of his 13-year sentence for the alleged theft of $250 million from the coffers of Delta State when he was its governor. Ibori had been jailed on April 12, 2012 and deported final December. Having been punished with imprisonment, he deserves rehabilitation and reintegration into society, and naturally a second likelihood, however to not be celebrated. At the same time as somebody who doesn’t have a excessive opinion of our political class, I used to be shocked by the revelations on the social gathering made by the Nationwide Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus. Hear him: “Earlier than the 2015 elections, I acquired a name from our chief (Ibori), and I requested him the path. He (Ibori) informed me Okowa (present governor of Delta State) ought to be supported. I used to be then the Deputy Nationwide Chairman. I gathered all my individuals; I stated I’ve acquired an order from our chief. Your Excellency, I’m grateful that your choice was proper. That was how we supported Dr. Okowa as a result of the chief spoke to us.”

Maybe, solely in Nigeria, will a person  serving time   for stealing the funds of a state, decide the subsequent governor of that very same state. That that is being publicly celebrated two years later by the chief of the opposition makes it the extra tragic. So what classes are we to attract from the  Secondus story narrated with a lot relish? That crime pays and that the governor of the state I name dwelling was imposed by a person serving time having been discovered responsible of looting the state’s funds. What morals was Secondus educating the younger ones as they sat all the way down to take the JAMB examinations? That they don’t want to fret themselves going to high school or present process tertiary training; that every one they want is get into energy by any means and proceed the rot. The PDP has been accused through the years of looting the nation, I had not bogged myself down with this as a result of its principal accusers are just like the pot calling the kettle black. However Secondus as its chief, shot the social gathering  within the foot. The PDP is sort of a particular person accused of being a thief, discovered cuddling one other man’s calf in her bosom; in an honest society, or in an honest organisation, Secondus would have resigned or be compelled to give up. However I don’t suppose such a requirement would come from the social gathering or its members.

I’ve hope within the youthful technology supplied they’re guarded by a patriotic ideology, an abiding religion within the sovereignty of the individuals  with an agenda to chart a distinct course from the one the nation has been subjected to since  independence. However to merely suppose issues will probably be totally different simply because an individual is younger, is to be unwise. That is why I don’t suppose the “Not too younger to run” marketing campaign makes a lot sense.

I recall {that a} related marketing campaign was launched  about 2000 by those who styled themselves the “Beneath 50” politicians and one other group, the “Beneath 40s.” What has occurred is that the previous at the moment are of their mid and late 60s and the latter of their mid-50s and nothing modified as a result of they merely labored to take over the mantle of ineptitude and parochialism, and have since disappeared into the recycling bins of the PDP and All Progressives Congress, APC.
